A football fan was killed and dozens were injured in a crush outside an Iraqi stadium.

According to local media, at least one football fan was murdered and 60 others were injured in a crash at a stadium in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

It happened when hundreds of people gathered at the Basra International Stadium to witness Iraq face Oman in the Arabian Gulf Cup final.

According to a medical source, some of the injured were in severe condition, according to the state-owned Iraqi National Agency (INA).

Several persons were seen on video lying motionless on the ground.

Another video showed a massive crowd stretching down a road leading to the stadium.

The Arabian Gulf Cup is Iraq's first regional football tournament in several decades.

After many years of conflict and political turmoil, it was meant to present a more positive image of the country.
