Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials have launched an investigation into the incident (file image)

On Wednesday, two JetBlue planes collided on a taxiway at a New York airport, the second strange incident there in recent days.

According to officials, an aircraft heading for Puerto Rico collided with the tail of a parked plane as it was leaving the gate.

There were no reported injuries, and passengers boarded a separate aircraft after returning to the gate.

JetBlue announced in a statement that flight 1603 had "light touch" with a parked unoccupied aircraft.

"Safety is JetBlue's top priority, and both aircraft involved will be removed from service for inspection, and the incident will be reviewed," the company added.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have initiated an inquiry into the event.

It comes only days after two passenger jets nearly collided at the airport.

The first plane was preparing to take off, while the second was traversing the same runway. When an air traffic controller observed the two, a collision was nearly avoided.

"Cancel take-off clearance, Delta 1943! Cancel take-off clearance, Delta 1943! "According to an audio clip released by LiveATC, a service that posts aircraft communications, the controller said.

When the Delta plane came to a stop, the planes were about 1,000 feet (300 meters) apart.

Delta Air Lines said in a statement that it will cooperate with an inquiry into the occurrence. The other plane's operator, American Airlines, did not issue a comment and instead forwarded questions to the FAA.
